Gold Canyon C.O.P.
Celebrates 2nd Anniversary
By Christina Fuoco-
Karasinski
The News
Gold Canyon Citizens on
Patrol (C.O.P.) celebrated its
second anniversary recently
by honoring the top contributors
of the Pinal County Sheriff’s
Office program as well
as those who supported the
group.
“It was really great,” said
Pat Prince, adviser liaison
between the volunteer program
and the sheriff’s office.
“We had about 55 people attend
that. We put it together at
short notice.”
Pinal County Supervisor
Sandie Smith was presented
with a gift for her efforts on
behalf of C.O.P.
Genevieve Bricker, representing
A.D.O.B.E., and John
Enright, Gold Canyon Business
Association member,
received certificates of appreciation
for purchasing a $500
GPS system for the patrol vehicle,
Prince said.
“If you’re out doing a night
patrol and you’re out in the
rural area, you can’t see anything,”
Prince said of the importance
of a GPS system. “You can’t see street
signs. It
really has benefitted us, especially
some of the men who
watch those areas closely.”

Four Rescued From
Wilderness
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The News
Superstition Search and Rescue
saved four people during
three incidents in the Superstition
Wilderness October
11-12.
Gilbert resident Elizabeth
Boeppla, 58, told Superstition
Search and Rescue on
October 11 that she “always
thought it would be thrilling
to hike cross country.”
“After hiking four miles and
realizing she was alone, she
called 9-1-1 in a panic and
crying for help,” said Robert
Cooper, Superstition Search
and Rescue commander. “After
her call for help, she ran
across some hikers who pointed
her in the correct direction,
where we met up with her.”
Also on October 11, 72-yearold
Paul Cox informed his
wife that he was hiking to
Weaver’s Needle to scope
things out before he led a group hike
the weekend of
October 18. His wife called
for assistance when he did
not return home for dinner.
“He said he lost the trail and
bushwacked for two hours
then called it a day,” Cooper
said.
Two females— 24-year-old
Samantha Drouillard and
25-year-old Jennifer Richard,
both of Chandler— attempted
to hike the “Ridgeline” across
the top of the Superstition
Mountains from Lost Dutchman
State Park and down
Carney Springs on October
12. After 10 hours of hiking,
they only reached the halfway
point so they gave up.
