14 Residents Apply For
Open Council Seat
Decision may come as early as next week
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The News
APACHE JUNCTION- Fourteen
Apache Junction residents
are vying for the City
Council position left open
by Councilman Joe Severs’
abrupt resignation in October.
Interviews will be held during
the 6 p.m. Monday, November
17, work session. The meeting time was
bumped up
from 7 p.m to 6 p.m. to handle
the flood of applicants. A
decision is expected during
the 7 p.m. Tuesday, November
18, regular meeting.
In no particular order, the
applicants are:
Doug Coleman, who was
elected as Apache Junction’s
mayor for 6 terms (12 years)
and was a city councilman for
four years, turned in an application.
“I do miss working with the
other members of the council
and I miss working with the
city staff,” Coleman told The
Apache Junction/Gold Canyon
News in October. “I’ve
been encouraged by a lot of
people.”
John Kantowski explained
he has been thinking about applying for
City Council for
“some time now.”
“With the resignation of
Mr. Severs, it leaves a void
in council. With all the new
projects coming up before the
election, we can not afford to
have a tie vote that will kill an
issue or project,” Kantowski
said by e-mail. He told the
News that he does not participate
in telephone interviews.
