The News
Apache Junction Police are
asking for the public’s help in
locating a man who tried to
kidnap a girl near Ironwood
Drive and Apache Trail about
7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April
2.
The girl’s mother described
the man as Hispanic, approximately
25 to 30 years old,
5-foot 1 inch tall and 130 to
140 pounds. He was wearing
a gray T-shirt with either blue
or black cotton-type pants.
“(He) jumped out of the
passenger side of a 1990-
95 white Ford pick-up-type
truck,” Chief Jerald Monahan
said in a press release. “The
mother further described the
truck as having white wheel
rims and possibly silver running
boards.”
The mother, who was carrying
groceries from nearby
Food City, dropped the bag
and grabbed her daughter. The
Hispanic man then released
the girl and fled back into the
truck which then proceeded north on
Ironwood Drive. A
female driver in a separate
vehicle momentarily stopped
to assist the woman who had
dropped her groceries.
Anyone who witnessed this
event is requested to contact
the Apache Junction Police
Department Criminal Investigation
Division at (480) 982-
8260 or the Crime Information
Line at (480) 474-8585.

Police Communication
Center Honors Staff
April 12-18 is Telecommunicator Week
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The News
The Apache Junction Police
Department is honoring its
communication center staff
during National Public Safety
Telecommunicator Week
April 12-18.
Government officials have
been invited to tour the facility
at Idaho Road and Superstition
Boulevard, however,
the general public will not be
allowed to enter.
“We can’t have our center
open to the public because
of the security level of the
information that we process
through the state and federal
databases,” said Kathy Jeter,
communications administrator.
“You have to have a background
clearance to come
in.”
To honor the telecommunicators,
Chief Jerald Monahan
has purchased little gift packets
for each of the 13 dispatchers,
Jeter said. There are
three senior telecommunicators
who are shift supervisors,
nine telecommunicators
and Jeter.
“What most people don’t
realize is the types of calls they
handle,” Jeter said about
her department. “We call
them ‘First Responders’ because
they have first contact
with people.
“They’re in a hysterical
state. We try to calm them
down and try to get some information
from them, whether
they need police, fire or medical.
The stress that’s on them
(the telecommunicators) in
that respect (is tremendous).
They’re doing multiple things
at the same time.”
