Barker Only Winner In
Council Primary
Four to vie for two remaining seats in
May— Smithson beats Eck in recall
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The News
City Councilwoman Robin
Barker easily won a second
consecutive term, garnering
1,673 votes in the Tuesday,
March 8, City of Apache
Junction Primary Election,
according to the unofficial results
from Pinal County Friday,
March 11.
Council members Jeff Serdy
and Chip Wilson along with
contenders Christa Rizzi and
Dave Waldron will vie for the
two remaining seats in the
May 17 General Election.
“State law allows for both
a primary and general election,”
said City Clerk Kathy
Connelly.
“In order to be elected at the
primary, a person needs to get
a majority of the ballots cast
(2,863 ballots per the unofficial
results). In order for
someone to be clearly elected
at the primary, they needed to
receive 1,433 votes. Anyone
who did not receive at least
that number would either go
into the general election or
would be eliminated. State
law also requires that I put
forward two candidates for
any remaining seats. As of
now there are two seats remaining
to be filled which requires
that four candidates go
forward.”
Mayor John Insalaco ran unopposed
in the primary and
also won another term.
The General Plan question,
which is considered a blueprint
to the city, passed 1,988
to 817.

Larkin Alcohol Level
.110
Sheriff’s office will be submitting two
charges
By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski
The News
Pinal County Assessor L.
Paul Larkin’s blood alcohol
level was .110 when he was
arrested last month on suspicion
of driving under the
influence on Monday, Feb.
7, according to an Arizona
Department of Public Safety
Crime Laboratory report released
by the Pinal County
Sheriff’s Office.
Tim Gaffney, the PCSO
spokesman, said his office
will be submitting these
charges to the Coolidge City
Court this week:
1. Driving while impaired
to the slightest degree by alcohol.
2. Driving with a blood alcohol
concentration of .08 or
more.
Larkin was arrested on suspicion
of driving under the
influence after an anonymous
tip was sent to the Pinal
County Sheriff’s Office
through its website on Feb. 7,
Gaffney said.
He said the anonymous tip
read, “The Pinal County Assessor
frequents the Kokopelli
Moon Saloon every day
(Monday through Friday)
around 3 p.m. until around
5 p.m. then, inebriated, he
gets into his late-model silver
Dodge Dakota and drives
home. Why does the Pinal
County Sheriff turn a blind
(eye) on this?”
According to Gaffney, at
5:26 p.m., Larkin drove his
2008 Dodge Dakota out of
the Kokopelli Moon Saloon
and traveled west on Highway
287 toward Christensen
Road.
